Customized Employment

Overview

Customized Employment is a unique approach to providing job development and job retention services through an individualized process that fits each person's particular needs. Services are provided by qualified staff who are Association of Community Rehabilitation Educators certified through Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD). All Customized Employment Services are funded through OOD.

Discovery Phase

In the Discovery phase, the job developer evaluates an individual’s interests, abilities, and aptitudes by interacting with the person seeking employment in various settings, including the home and community. Discovery activities may include: community observations in places where the individual enjoys spending their time; participating in activities that the individual enjoys; discussion of hobbies, collections, and interests; and interviews with people central to the individual’s life, such as friends, family, teachers, and service providers.

Development Phase

In the development phase, the job developer and individual go over the information that was gathered in the discovery phase and work together to create a list of possible jobs or workplaces. The job developer, individual, and other providers will work as a team to develop a resume and any relevant supporting materials and follow up with potential employers.

Employment may be the result of job carving or individual negotiation with the employer to fit the needs of the person seeking employment.
