50 For 50 #2: Our First Building

Before the University of Cincinnati Rehabilitation Center (now IKRON) could open its doors, it needed a set of doors to open. Dr. Julian Myers approached UC's Dean Albert Yates to share his vision and seek an on-campus space where the UC Center could come to life. Three vacant, condemned houses were sitting idle on Scioto Street on the outskirts of UC campus, and Dean Yates offered Dr. Julian his pick of them.
After a tour of all three buildings, Dr. Julian chose the one that had an attached front porch, so that it appeared more like a typical house and would be more welcoming to participants. In January of 1969, a group of students and faculty renovated and painted the old house that was to be IKRON's first home.
The building was still unfinished, but that didn't stop a dream from launching when UC Rehabilitation Center's doors opened to participants on January 13, 1969.
