This is the eleventh in a continuing series of stories--one every day for 50 days--to conclude IKRON's year-long celebration of our 50th anniversary. Missed one? No problem! See the entire series on our news page here.

IKRON still possesses, and frequently reads from, the staff journal from the first year of the UC Rehabilitation Center (IKRON's original name). Today's story comes from the week of April 28, 1969, and describes new equipment arriving at the Rehabilitation Center. In those early months, the building was still being repaired and updated as time, funds, and equipment became available.

April 28
"New refrigerator will be furnished to us by Mr. Blake Cardwell, General Electric Co. on Dana Avenue. We also expect a large upright piano, a gift of Mrs. Brownell Carr, Wyoming, Ohio. It should go in the dining room where the desk now stands."

April 29
"Refrigerator delivered this morning from General Electric. Transportation called concerning moving piano. They are not sure that they can move it.
Staff suggest use of basement for woodworking."

May 1
"Trainees worked outside planting seeds for flower beds and we also transplanted a few of the cuttings from [UC's] greenhouses. The Workshop in the basement is coming along.
We now have a piano--the movers brought it in around 3:00 PM. The piano seems to be in good shape and tune."

Today, our kitchen sees enough action to merit multiple refrigerators and freezers, including a large walk-in. We continue to have a garden with vegetables and flowers every spring. Our art group fills some of the same creative functions as the former workshop. And while we no longer have a piano, we do have participants who occasionally bring in a guitar on special activity days, or we use another version of musical accompaniment--YouTube.
